Kunde Leaves Farming Risks: Leaf Picking and Grain Plans
Decide the field objective before the first picking
The risk in a combined kunde plan is counting an attractive leaf sale while assuming a later grain harvest is unchanged. That outcome has not been established for your block. Discuss the identified crop, site and intended leaf-versus-grain plan with a competent local adviser; record the assumptions you still need to test.
Set observable decision gates
| Risk | Evidence to retain | Decision before expanding |
|---|---|---|
| Unclear crop objective | Written block plan for leaves, grain or a planned combination | Pause repeated leaf promises until the plan is clear |
| Wrong buyer specification | Approved sample and unwanted-stalk description | Revise sorting or the sale unit and retest |
| High labour per delivery | Picking and sorting hours against accepted output | Recalculate contribution before increasing orders |
| Missed handover | Picking, dispatch and receiving times | Agree a workable route or change the delivery window |
| Unpaid stock | Accepted quantity, due date and cash received | Limit further credit to an affordable amount |
| Unknown later field outcome | Picking dates and later observations for the same block | Keep the effect unknown until adequate evidence exists |
These are proposed planning controls, not evidence that a particular farm experienced the problems. Do not infer an exact yield reduction, chemical treatment or safe harvest interval from this article.
Stage the trial by prerequisites
Identify the planting source and block, confirm land and water arrangements, and check applicable requirements. Ask the buyer to define a usable leaf sample and buying unit. Obtain locally appropriate growing advice, then measure the picking, sorting and route at the trial scale. A crop cycle is not shortened because a business checklist uses a 30-day calendar.
Record the later field outcome where grain is part of the plan. A single season and one buyer may not support a reliable comparison of alternatives. Note weather, crop plan, costs and unresolved factors instead of attributing every difference to one action.
Make the decision from the full record
Compare paid leaf sales with attributable work, delivery, losses and cash timing. Continue, adjust the specification, defer expansion or stop an affected activity according to the evidence and your affordable loss limit. The World Vegetable Center manual provides general cowpea-leaf production guidance; it is not a field assessment or a guarantee of repeat demand.
