Kunde Leaves Farming Costs: Budget Leaf and Grain Decisions
Keep one account for the crop
Before calculating a kunde-leaf budget, identify the crop and decide with competent local advice whether the plot is intended mainly for leaves, grain or a planned combination. Do not create one leaf-sales forecast and a separate unchanged grain forecast for the same field without evidence that both outputs are achievable together.
The World Vegetable Center’s Kenya manual covers cowpea leaves, but its publisher page does not provide your plot’s yield, local quote or a guaranteed effect of picking. Your budget must use the actual field plan and measured results.
Obtain quantities and quotes
| Budget area | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Planting material | Named crop and source, pack quantity, lot or receipt, and local suitability advice |
| Plot and establishment | Area, land access terms, preparation and inputs for the chosen field plan |
| Water | Source, equipment, payment timing and any applicable approvals |
| Leaf picking | Dates, workers, time and which block was picked |
| Sorting and packing | Unwanted stalks, rejected material, buyer’s unit, containers and ties |
| Delivery | Route, receiving time, returns and payment-collection journey |
| Remaining crop | Subsequent crop outcome recorded for the same block and season |
Separate initial tools and deposits from recurring inputs and the working cash needed while waiting for payment. Obtain written quotes for the same specification, quantity and delivery location. Record exclusions and quote date. An unknown quantity must stay unknown until measured; it is not a zero-cost line.
Account for the decision, not just the immediate sale
Record leaf revenue and the labour and delivery cost of each picking session. Also retain the actual later outcome of the same block if grain is part of the plan. Compare alternatives only when their assumptions are stated consistently; the available evidence may be insufficient to quantify the crop use forgone. Do not invent a reduction or claim there is no reduction.
Check with WRA whether the proposed water source and works require approval. KEPHIS provides seed-certification information, but the supplier and lot still need verification. Set an affordable loss limit and revise the scale if you cannot finance the full crop and payment cycle.
This page supplies a quote-based method. It is not a local per-acre budget, a guaranteed harvest or a forecast of profit from both leaves and grain.
