Growing and Handling Managu for Sale: Identity and Quality Checks
Keep planting identity linked to the order
Before establishing a trial bed, have a competent local adviser confirm the intended edible planting material. Record its source and identify the bed. The buyer’s order should specify the leaf and tender-shoot balance, expected condition, unit and receiving point. A common market name is not a substitute for identifying the crop.
This is an operating-record approach, not a prescription for cultivation, pesticide use or preparation. Use the World Vegetable Center’s Kenya manual and qualified local advice to select practices for the actual crop and site.
Build an acceptance chain
| Stage | Evidence to retain | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Planting source | Identity confirmation, seller and bed reference | Is the crop the intended edible material? |
| Buyer sample | Leaf and shoot composition, preparation feedback | Does the buyer accept the intended texture? |
| Sorting | Gross harvest, removed stems and damaged material | How much becomes the agreed sale unit? |
| Packing | Bunch count or weight and buyer allocation | Are the units consistent with the order? |
| Handover | Accepted count, time and exceptions | Was the agreed product actually received? |
Ask an experienced customer to assess a properly identified sample using their usual preparation. Record the outcome accurately; this does not establish safety or the preferences of all customers. If the customer wants a different shoot-to-leaf balance, update the specification and assess the extra sorting time.
Investigate the point at which quality changed
If the wrong or unidentified plant material is found, hold the affected material and obtain competent identification before any sale. If a verified harvest is acceptable at packing but wilted at handover, investigate packing, loading, transit and delays. If a buyer returns unsold stock after acceptance, review the order quantity and the agreed returns arrangement. These are different problems and should have separate records.
Keep harvest containers suitable and clean for their intended use. This guide does not establish a universal storage period or authorize an unverified food-safety claim. Take care not to identify a plant by appearance alone or recommend chemical treatment from a symptom description.
At the end of the route, reconcile the packed count, accepted count, returns and cash collected. Increase commitments only when the crop identity, buyer specification, quality and timing can be maintained with the available resources.
