Managu Farming Costs in Kenya: Build a Trial Budget

Start with a defined product, not an assumed profit

A useful managu budget begins with the confirmed edible planting material, a suitable plot and a buyer’s preferred balance of leaves and tender shoots. The name used at the market is not enough to identify the plant. Obtain competent local confirmation before establishing or selling the crop. This guide cannot verify your crop identity or establish a fixed cost per acre.

Quote each part of the pilot

Budget areaQuantity and evidence to collect
Planting materialNamed, identified source, pack or seedling quantity, lot and supplier invoice
Plot and establishmentTrial area, access terms, preparation and locally advised inputs
WaterSource access, suitable equipment, operating cost and necessary approvals
Harvest and sortingTime spent selecting acceptable leaves and tender shoots, excluding unwanted growth
BunchingAgreed bunch standard, ties, containers and weighing arrangement
DeliveryTrip, waiting, container return and the actual customer payment date

Ask a competent adviser what is appropriate for the actual location rather than copying a planting rate from another farmer. The World Vegetable Center’s Kenya manual is a general reference for African nightshade, not a site-specific cost estimate.

Separate cash commitments from the cost of one sale

List tools and plot setup as initial cash needs; list recurring inputs, sorting, bunch ties and transport for the relevant operating period. A refundable deposit ties up cash even where it is not an immediate operating expense. Do not charge the full purchase price of equipment twice when you later allocate its use over time.

Time the identity checks, selection of tender shoots, removal of unsuitable material and bunching. Those tasks are easy to hide inside a general labour amount. Obtain written local quotes and record what each quote excludes. A seed packet quoted by weight is not a confirmed number of saleable bunches.

Reconcile the trial with the buyer

Record harvested and rejected material, completed bunches, accepted bunches, returns and cash collected. If the buyer requests more tender shoots or fewer stems, the extra sorting can change the cost per accepted bunch. A buyer’s favourable comment does not establish a paid order.

The Water Resources Authority describes water permitting; check whether the actual source and proposed works require approval. Set an affordable loss limit before planting and do not present an invented budget as a local supplier quotation or net profit.
