Managu Farming in Kenya: Seed, Water and Trading Checks
Describe the activity before asking for requirements
Write down the identified crop, county, growing location, water source, intended buyer and whether you are growing leaves, selling planting material or operating a separate stall. Those are different activities. The applicable checks depend on the actual arrangement; this page is an enquiry guide, not an approval or legal opinion for every farm.
Ask the responsible authority the specific question
| Topic | Official or local enquiry | Explain your situation |
|---|---|---|
| Planting material | Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service | Named crop, source and whether you are a grower or a seed seller |
| Water source and works | Water Resources Authority | Source, abstraction method and proposed works |
| Business registration | Business Registration Service | Intended name and structure |
| Tax and invoices | Kenya Revenue Authority | Actual selling arrangement and documentation requested by the buyer |
| Local trading | Relevant county office | Farm-gate sale, market stall, premises or delivery arrangement |
KEPHIS describes seed-certification services. WRA provides water-use and permitting information. Neither reference confirms that your planting material is the intended edible crop or that your proposed water arrangement needs a particular permit. Ask for an assessment of the actual facts and keep the answer.
Business registration does not automatically cover a water source, seed trade, market stall or food-processing activity. Similarly, a buyer’s acceptance of leaves is not regulatory approval. If a plan changes—for example, from raw-leaf supply to processing—recheck the changed activity with the responsible authority.
Keep identity and health decisions separate
Have the intended edible crop identified by a competent local adviser. Do not use this page to identify an unknown plant or select a pesticide. The World Vegetable Center’s Kenya manual is a crop-production reference that must be adapted to local conditions; it is not a certificate for an individual farm or harvest.
KRA publishes eTIMS information. Confirm your current invoicing and record-keeping obligations for the actual transaction, rather than assuming another trader’s status applies. Record the authority, date, operation described, answer, any conditions and unresolved questions. Complete applicable prerequisites before taking orders that depend on them. This guide makes no claim about a fixed permit fee, exemption or approval outcome.
